History comes alive in Andersonville. Georgia the first weekend in October when hundreds of Civil War reenactors set up camps and stage two realistic mock battles, the first at 3pm Saturday, October 5 and the second at 2 pm Sunday, October 6.

Sutlers selling Civil War uniforms and accouterments, guns, swords, flags and Civil War era civilian clothing add color and interest as do craftsmen such as gunsmiths, blacksmiths, basket makers, quilters, weavers, and artists of all kinds.

Gates open at 10 am both days. The first big activity is the 80-unit parade on the main street on Saturday, October 5 at 11 a.m.

Special entertainment includes performances by The Southern Gunslingers, Stilt Walkers, line dancing, clogging, military band performances, and gospel singing.

The little village of Andersonville reluctantly played a part in Civil War history as supply center for Andersonville Confederate Prison. All 45,000 Union prisoners of war and all supplies for the prison were shipped by rail to the town’s depot. The town’s DrummerBoyMuseum features a diorama of the prison and the town as they were in 1864. Visitors to the Fair can also visit the actual site of the Confederate prison.

The Andersonville Historic Fair is sponsored by The Andersonville Guild and Town Council to raise funds for historic preservation and to attract tourists to the area. For further information: 229-924-2558 or www.andersonvillegeorgia.info
