This large segmented bowl (11" x 5") is full of surprises. First, the rim ring is of chestnut, a once majestic variety in our eastern forests, but now nearly extinct. Even many woodworkers fail to recognize the wood between the purpleheart rings. (shh, don't tell them, but it's plywood.) The next two rings are ash, another threatened tree variety. The scalloping was a complete surprise. The bottom or base ring is oak, yes, the mighty oak.
