Contact management

I'm wondering how others manage all of the information from places they contact. I used to use ACT! when it was a one-time purchase item, but that version no longer works. It seems all the new contact management software comes with a monthly fee, and I'd rather not pay forever for such a thing. Right now I'm logging everything in a notebook, and that's fine, but I'd like to find a more efficient method that's still affordable. Any ideas?

Distinguishing Entertainers from Musicians

Does anyone else feel that entertainers and performers are the red-headed stepchildren of FestivalNet? Very often the "Entertainment" line of an event listing talks about what kind of music they look for. Sometimes under "Other" they'll list magicians, jugglers, etc. Even the newsletters break down into four categories: Promoters, Artists & Crafters, Musicians, and Food Vendors. Nothing for entertainers!? I wish FN would distinguish between musical and non-musical entertainment. Many events say they want "entertainment" and you find out it's a music-only event. It wastes my time to apply to them, and wastes their time to hear from me. FN, please make a clear distinction between performers and bands. We are not the same.

I just started my business as a Velociraptor performer out of Collinsville MS. I only do this work on the weekends due to my main job I have throughout the week. For my business as a performer, I will do birthday parties, events, and even pranks (in controlled and safe environments only). Walk around Entertainment

So does anyone here do walk around entertainment? My question is this- what is the protocal for entertaining? Do you just show up and start gathering a crowd? Should I get a booth or worry about a performance space? Can I use a microphone? Is it okay to "hat" the crowd for tips? I know every situation is different, but some general guidelines on how it's done would be great!
