By the early 1990s, The Lace Mill, as it became known, was abandoned, boarded up, and used as a storage warehouse. In 2013, the old mill was redeveloped into housing for Kingston artists. Today, The Lace Mill provides space for exhibitions, music events, and other artistic activities for both residents and the surrounding community. The Lace Mill is a perfect surreal setting. It is a structure surrounding an old historic machine reminiscent of those found in a Buster Keaton film, complete with massive steam pipes and mysterious bolted doors leading to hidden chambers. Art hangs on the brick walls of the building that houses The Machine. About the Artist Working in the realm of surrealism, Mark Hopkins explores the dynamism of life in the 21st century. Drawing from past experiences, popular culture, and esotericism, he creates a body of work that both observes and critiques modern culture while illuminating the mysteries that unite humanity. His work provides deeper insight into how we perceive reality. Mark is both classically trained and self-taught. He has studied the figure and portraiture to refine his technical skills and translate realism into the surreal imagery that defines his work. He considers himself a universal citizen, seeking to understand the commonalities among all people while celebrating the rich diversity of religions, cultures, and traditions around the world.
